OR Consulting — St. Peter in the Forest

Nestled on the Northern edge of Epping Forest, the Grade II listed Church of St Peter-in-the-Forest in Walthamstow is a place of deep heritage and significance. Originally built in 1840, designed by John Shaw Jnr., the church was on the Historic at Risk register when we were appointed as environmental and acoustic engineers. The West end of the church was restored to its original design and a new mezzanine level was created.

To protect the historic fabric of the church, we designed a free-standing structure within its original volume, seamlessly introducing community, performance, meeting, commercial kitchen, and spiritual spaces. Our approach balanced architectural sensitivity, environmental responsibility, and conservation priorities.

Sustainability Achievements:

  • Subtly improving the passive thermal performance of the original building fabric.
  • Leveraging the thermal mass of the church to provide free cooling in the Summer months.
  • Using de-stratification ventilation to reduce heating loads and installing a low-carbon heating and hot water system.
  • Discreetly integrating a lift within the new structure.
  • Implementing low-energy lighting and smart controls for efficiency and ambiance.
  • Installing energy sub-metering for long-term monitoring and optimization.
