The brief was to create a versatile, accessible, and low-carbon space that could empower St Mary’s social mission.

OR Consulting — St. Mary’s Centre Stoke Newington

Set within the walls of the Grade II St Mary’s Church in Stoke Newington, OR Consulting was tasked with transforming and extending the existing church rooms designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1856 — spaces that had long fallen short of serving the evolving needs of a diverse and growing community.

This project amplified the church’s social reach, providing comfort and dignity to vulnerable community members, and future-proofing a space that will serve generations to come.

The design focused on:

  • Infilling a former courtyard space between the 1996 extension, church, and rectory to create a multi-purpose hall and reconfigured ancillary spaces.
  • Enabling the hall to be sub-divided into two smaller spaces, allowing multiple community groups to use it simultaneously or host large events.
  • Incorporating a semi-commercial kitchen, supporting the Church’s food bank, soup kitchen, and migrant centre while also allowing separate, secure spaces for the night shelter.
  • Designing a service core with dedicated WC and shower facilities, meeting rooms, and a staff office — ensuring functionality and dignity for all users.
  • Upgrading heating and electrical services across the New and Old Rectories to maximize utilization of existing spaces while improving energy efficiency.
