Our design approach was carefully crafted to respect the heritage of the building while introducing discreet, energy-efficient solutions to enhance comfort and functionality.
The Crypt project at Christ Church Spitalfields was all about honouring Hawksmoor’s original architectural vision while seamlessly transforming the space into a versatile recital hall, lounge café, and kitchen facility. Our design approach was carefully crafted to respect the heritage of the building while introducing discreet, energy-efficient solutions to enhance comfort and functionality.• Hiding the modern, preserving the historic — discreetly distributing services through a custom-designed floor trench system, protecting the historic fabric.
To achieve this delicate balance, we focused on:
- Leveraging the natural thermal mass of the undercroft to passively cool the space in summer and reduce energy consumption.
- Ensuring air flows freely between spaces while maintaining strict acoustic separation.
- Introducing underfloor heating and a bespoke condensing boiler system, eliminating the need for any façade penetrations.
- Applying advanced ozone filtration for kitchen ventilation, allowing low-level air discharge without compromising the building’s exterior.
- Integrating a DDA-compliant lift and discreet food hoist, carefully coordinated to complement the building’s historic structure.
