OR Consulting — The Garden Museum Lambeth

The Garden Museum, housed in a Grade II listed former church adjacent Lambeth Palace in London, has long celebrated the beauty of gardens, but its growing success demanded expanded accommodation and a smarter, more sustainable approach to its environmental systems. Tasked with balancing conservation, functionality, and energy efficiency, OR Consulting crafted a design strategy that seamlessly integrates modern solutions with the Museum’s historic charm.

Our approach focused on:

  • Exceeding Part L2A 2010 standards by 40% through high-performance passive design in the new standalone structures.
  • Designing the new construction to encase the existing building, passively enhancing its thermal performance.
  • Implementing solar shading strategies to flood the new spaces with natural light while minimizing solar gains.
  • Optimising passive ventilation and cooling solutions for both the old and new buildings, ensuring year-round comfort.
  • Deploying de-stratification techniques to reduce heating energy consumption in the existing building by 10%.
  • Installing photovoltaics to generate renewable electricity without compromising the historic aesthetic.
  • Discreetly rerouting services away from the delicate historic fabric, protecting the building’s integrity.
