The Petchey Academy Phased Masterplan exemplifies OR Consulting’s commitment to creating sustainable, acoustically optimized spaces  that enhance the learning experience, particularly for students with specialised educational needs.

OR Consulting — Petchey Academy Phased Masterplan

OR Consulting Engineers were appointed as low-carbon building services engineers and acoustic consultants for the phased masterplan development for Petchey Academy. This initiative involved three phases: The Petchey Welcome; The Petchey Academy University Gateway and; The Petchey Renaissance Centre.

The Petchey Welcome development featured a new double-storey atrium to the front of the academy’s original entrance. The atrium serves as a modern reception and gallery space, designed to meet the academy’s functional needs while embracing sustainability and acoustic excellence.

The Petchey Academy University Gateway Project involved the redevelopment of a covered car park to create a new learning resource centre. The project was challenging acoustically, as its demise was located directly below the existing sports hall and impact noise, that would normally be audible from above, was acoustically isolated to minimise disruption to the education facilities.

The Petchey Renaissance Centre Project involved the creation of a new, standalone classroom block specifically designed to cater to children with specialist teaching needs.

Sustainability Achievements:

  • Optimized thermal and daylighting performance: ensuring the building’s form and fabric work together to enhance energy efficiency and provide natural lighting.
  • Acoustic screening optimization;: carefully shaping the building to ensure the best acoustic environment, supporting the needs of all learners.
  • Low-energy lighting and controls: designed to reduce energy consumption while meeting the building’s lighting requirements.
  • Heat pump technology: implementing efficient, sustainable heating systems to reduce energy use.
  • Mixed-mode ventilation strategy: combining natural and mechanical ventilation to maintain a comfortable, healthy indoor environment.
  • Security and access control systems: incorporating advanced security features, including CCTV, to ensure a safe and secure learning environment.
  • Acoustic design: developing a sound environment that exceeds Building Bulletin 93 standards, ensuring optimal acoustic comfort for all users.
