Brentwood Reception

OR Consulting &emdash; Brentwood Reception

This redevelopment modernised the school’s reception and classroom facilities while preserving the charm of its historic surroundings.

OR Consulting — Brentwood Reception

OR Consulting were appointed as building services engineers, lighting designers, and acousticians for the £2M low-carbon redevelopment and extension of the historic Brentwood School Bursary and Ashton buildings. This project created a new reception area to serve as the public face of Brentwood School, while respecting the surrounding heritage buildings. The design blends contemporary elements with a deep appreciation for the historical context, featuring a glazed façade that frames views of the neighbouring chapel, integrating them beautifully into the new design while flooding the space with daylight.

Sustainability Achievements:

  • Enhancing the passive environmental performance of the retained buildings by wrapping them with super-insulated extensions.
  • Minimising solar heat gains through the use of solar control glass to maintain comfort and energy efficiency.
  • Implementing natural ventilation and passive cooling techniques to improve indoor air quality while reducing energy use.
  • Installing low-energy lighting that seamlessly blends interior and exterior lighting elements, contributing to the building’s overall energy efficiency.
  • Introducing energy-efficient plant systems to heat the building, further reducing the carbon footprint.
  • Maximising natural daylighting within interior spaces to reduce reliance on artificial lighting.
