OR Consulting — Sutton Hoo

With a deep respect for its Anglo-Saxon history, our mission was to create modern, low-impact spaces that seamlessly enhance visitor experience while preserving the site’s profound heritage. By carefully balancing functionality, sustainability, and sensitivity, our work helps reconnect visitors with one of Britain’s most extraordinary archaeological sites, ensuring that both past and future can coexist in perfect harmony.

Key elements of our work included:

  • Supporting the construction of a new 18-metre high Observation Tower, offering unparalleled views of the Royal Burial Grounds.
  • Designing the building services and lighting for a newly landscaped route that guides visitors through the site’s ancient landscape.
  • Delivering building services, acoustic solutions, and low-energy lighting for the refurbished Café, Shop, and Exhibition building. Creating spaces that feel both contemporary and respectful.
  • Engineering the infrastructure for a new Welcome Building, ensuring it remains low-carbon and sympathetic to its surroundings.
  • Embedding sustainable design strategies to ensure low-energy consumption, minimal environmental footprint, and seamless integration with the landscape.
