OR Consulting were delighted to act as building services consultants, lighting designers, acousticians, and AV/IT consultants for the integrated refurbishment of the Main Lecture Theatre at the iconic Science Museum.

This multi-use auditorium was reimagined to host a wide range of events — from science demonstrations and lectures to recitals, films, and corporate events. Our work focused on enhancing both the functionality and visitor experience of this versatile space, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and cutting-edge design.

Key elements of the project included:

  • Optimisation of the existing air conditioning system using displacement ventilation techniques, accommodating a 20% increase in occupancy while reducing energy consumption.
  • Seamless integration of electrical, lighting, and AV systems, creating a fully coordinated and adaptable space.
  • Innovative low-energy lighting design, combining DMX-controlled theatrical lighting with a stunning LED architectural lighting scheme, transforming the space for different modes of operation and cutting lighting energy loads by over 50%.
