OR Consulting Engineers played a key role in the low-energy refurbishment of a 1920s warehouse, transforming it into a highly efficient, low-carbon office space for John Thompson and Partners Architects. The project seamlessly integrated renewable energy solutions and passive design strategies to create a workspace that prioritises sustainability and energy efficiency.

To maximise performance, photovoltaic and solar-thermal panels were installed above the south-facing windows. These panels serve a dual purpose—generating energy while acting as brise soleil to reduce internal heat gains. The photovoltaic system offsets the energy demands of the server room, cutting annual electricity consumption by 25%. Meanwhile, the solar-thermal array meets 40% of the building’s annual hot water needs.

Natural ventilation was a key design feature, with each office floor allowing for passive airflow. The central stairwell was carefully designed to function as a thermal chimney, enhancing ventilation and reducing the need for mechanical cooling. To further optimise comfort and efficiency, passive cooling techniques were employed, utilising Energen phase change panels to enhance the thermal mass of each office floor.

Lighting was designed with energy conservation in mind, using zoned controls that respond to natural daylight levels, reducing both electrical consumption and internal heat gains. The result is a highly efficient, low-carbon workspace that not only minimises environmental impact but also enhances occupant comfort.
