We’re delighted to share that The Africa Centre has been awarded Highly Commended at this year’s Civic Trust Awards.

Located in the heart of Southwark, The Africa Centre project is a carefully considered retrofit that brings new life to an existing building while celebrating its cultural significance. The scheme focused on delivering a vibrant, flexible space that supports community, culture, and collaboration.

Sustainability was central to the design approach. By prioritising reuse and refurbishment over demolition, the project significantly reduced embodied carbon while improving the building’s environmental performance. Targeted interventions enhanced energy efficiency, internal comfort, and overall usability, ensuring the building is fit for the future while respecting its past.

It was a hugely rewarding project to be involved in, working as part of a collaborative team committed to delivering both environmental and social value. Seeing the project recognised by the Civic Trust Awards is a testament to that collective effort.
