St Chads Student Housing

OR Consulting &emdash; St Chads Student Housing

This project reflects a future-focused design that blends sustainability, energy efficiency, and sensitivity to its heritage, creating a state-of-the-art living environment for students while ensuring the development is in harmony with its historic surroundings.

OR Consulting — St Chads Student Housing

OR Consulting Engineers acted as low-carbon building services engineers, acousticians, and lighting designers for the development of new student accommodation at the St Chad’s site of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. Located within a Conservation Area, the site is nestled between the Grade II listed house and a 1970s student accommodation block, requiring a careful balance of heritage sensitivity and modern sustainability.

Key features of the design include:

  • Building simulation and analysis — ensuring the building's energy performance is optimized from the outset.
  • Optimising passive building performance — enhancing the thermal efficiency of the building through careful design.
  • Low-energy mechanical and public health installations — focusing on efficient systems to minimize energy consumption.
  • Low-carbon, low-temperature heating scheme — providing individual heating solutions for each flat while ensuring the system can be future-proofed for future connection to a commercial district heating network.
  • Electric vehicle charging — designing infrastructure to support future EV charging stations, making the site more sustainable and adaptable.
  • Pre-fabrication techniques — employing off-site construction methods to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Detailing acoustic solutions to meet challenging acoustic targets, ensuring compliance with BREEAM standards for sustainability.
