Streatham and Clapham Girls School

OR Consulting &emdash; Streatham and Clapham Girls School

The project was designed to ensure its carbon emissions were 30% below the requirements of Part L and to target achieve a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating. From monitoring the building’s performance “in-use”, the building carbon emissions were found to be even lower than targeted.

OR Consulting — Streatham and Clapham Girls School

OR Consulting Engineers acted as environmental engineers, lighting designers and acoustic consultants for the phased extension and refurbishment of Streatham and Clapham School. The project involved creating a new Sixth Form Centre within a rooftop extension and a new extension wing to the front of the site which incorporated catering, dining, administrative, and sports facilities.  Both structures were constructed from cross laminated timber to create a sustainable and low carbon building form achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Sustainability Achievements

  • The Streatham and Clapham School project was designed and constructed to be an exemplar of sustainable design.
  • The project was a winner of multiple awards, including a CIBSE Building Performance Award.
  • Optimising passive performance: using pre-fabrication techniques to enhance the environmental efficiency of the new buildings.
  • Maximising natural light, minimising heat gain: selecting glass with a low solar heat gain coefficient to bring in daylight while reducing solar overheating.
  • Smart lighting solutions: installing low-energy lighting systems equipped with absence detection and daylighting controls to ensure energy efficiency.
  • Efficient ventilation: incorporating heat recovery ventilation to minimise heating loads during winter, and demand-controlled kitchen ventilation to optimise energy use.
  • Renewable energy integration: installing air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels to generate clean energy on-site.
