Engineers Create Energy Efficient Micro-climates Within Wine Tower
Building services and low energy consultants, OR Consulting, were employed by ES Group Limited to act as the mechanical and electrical designers for the recently completed Wine Tower at the Radisson Hotel in Zurich.
The Wine Tower consists of a purpose built wine storage facility located within the main restaurant/bar area of the hotel atrium. Over 2000 bottles of wine and champagne are stored within acrylic cases and stacked vertically within the tower.
The core of the Wine Tower is surrounded by a single glazed façade. Performers undertake aerial displays whilst retrieving and delivering the wine ordered by customers.
Design Activities
OR Consulting were involved in a wide range of design activities including:
- The development of a bespoke environmental control strategy. Each type of wine is maintained at its optimal storage temperatures by the creation of localised micro-climates.
- The development of an air re-circulation strategy, reducing the energy consumption of the Wine Tower by 50%.
- The design of the Wine Tower’s electrical distribution systems.
- The challenging co-ordination of services distribution within the core of the Wine Tower.
The Wine Tower opened in February 2009 and has been received enthusiastically by the Zurich Radisson and its guests.
