Tanaka Business School, Imperial College
The Tanaka Business School Project is a £25M higher education development for Imperial College.
The development was designed by Foster and Partners and consists of a glazed atrium space housing six lecture theatres, discussion rooms, informal group working spaces and a café, as well as the refurbishment of three floors of the Royal School of Mines.
Optimising the Performance of Construction Elements
To optimise the passive performance of the atrium space, extensive computer modelling was carried out. A translucent ETFE foil cushion roof solution together with low solar transmittance glass were adopted to reduce solar gains to the atrium space.
Natural ventilation techniques were adopted to ventilate / cool the spaces during mid season (Autumn and Spring).
Low Carbon Design
To limit the carbon footprint of the Tanaka Business School, excess capacity from Imperial College's energy centre has been utilised to not only heat but also to cool the building (by utilising absorption cooling).
The building incorporates a unique displacement ventilation strategy, coupled with heated and chilled floors, that conditions the environment within the occupied zone and tempers conditions (within acceptable parameters) above this level.
Project completed by Peter Roberts as lead designer for Buro Happold Consulting Engineers.
