Loughborough Centre for Collaborative Construction Research

The Loughborough Centre for Collaborative Construction Research is a £3.8M new higher education project for Loughborough University.

The development was architecturally designed by Swanke Hayden Connell Architects.

Minimising heatloads

A crucial element of the project was to create an extension to the existing civil engineering building.

It was proposed to wrap the extension around two sides of the existing building to limit fabric heat losses.

To similarly reduce solar gains the façade of the new extension was sheathed in a mesh façade treatment.

The performance of the mesh blades was modelled to optimise its shading co-efficient.

Conservation of Energy

The design incorporate conservation strategies such as: water efficient fittings, mixed mode ventilation, optimised day lighting and adiabatic cooling.

Project completed by Peter Roberts as lead designer for Buro Happold Consulting Engineers.
