Kent Reservoir

Kent Reservoir

Kent Reservoir Eco House

Project Background

Low carbon designers OR Consulting have worked with Brinkworth Design on the conversion of two 10002 agricultural water storage tanks to create two luxury low carbon eco-houses that met the targets set out by the Code for Sustainable Homes. One of the eco houses was designed to act as home and studio for artist Dinos Chapman.

Service Provided

We created an environmental strategy to optimise the performance of these unique eco house constructions and the services installations within them. This strategy was fine tuned to satisfy stringent planning constraints and the Code for Sustainable Homes targets.

Scope of Services

The project included design strategies such as:

  • The lining of the “tanking” walls and use of earth bunds to create a super-insulated structure.
  • The introduction of high performance glazing to optimise daylight within the eco house.
  • The adoption of natural ventilation and passive cooling techniques.
  • The detailing of air-tight, external constructions.
  • The “detailing out” of the thermal bridges, associated with the structural interventions required.
  • The adoption of a ground source heat pump strategy to heat and cool the eco house via under floor distribution.
  • The adoption of a whole house ventilation strategy, with heat recovery.
  • The installation of energy efficient light fittings and controls.
  • The introduction of a rainwater recycling system.
  • Project Highlight

The total transformation of the environment within this unique structure using passive and low carbon engineering strategies.
